Months after several States declared quarantine due to Coronavirus as a measure to mitigate contagion at the epicenter of the pandemic, the North American country has more than 2 million people infected with Covid-19, but additionally faces the challenge of economic reopening.
Following the launch of the "Opening Up America Again" program by the White House, the WHO has urged the government to take measures to prevent and control the risk of contagion in the workplace, that is, to strictly comply with occupational safety and health criteria, which if not done, would result in a resurgence of the virus.
As we mentioned in the article How to return to work after Covid-19, each employer must evaluate the risk of their economic sector and of course those specific to each employee's work, to minimize exposure since, "the safety and health of the workforce is paramount today" according to the Director General of the ILO. While these measures must be adapted to the current situation of each state, the ILO suggests that they also include education and training on safe and healthy work practices without neglecting the provision of necessary protective equipment for the development of activities.
Measures recommended by the WHO to reduce the risk of contagion
- Identify the risk of each activity carried out within the facilities where the work is performed.
- Reduce or avoid physical interactions between workers and other personnel that are part of the company.
- Implement improvements in air circulation; however, it is not recommended to place workers in open spaces or with few barriers in their distribution, as it has been identified that under normal conditions, these characteristics worsen employee health.
- Carry out exhaustive and constant cleaning activities to prevent the survival of the virus on different surfaces.
- Provide protective equipment appropriate to each task
- Offer company staff mental and emotional support through psychology professionals.
By complying with the above recommendations, a safe reactivation can be guaranteed and the risk of resurgences in the country can be minimized. The risk of a resurgence
Although it is expected that after reaching the peak of contagions in the country, a gradual de-escalation will be imminent and with it the return to "normalcy", a resurgence of the virus is more than a possibility, a fact, so that working to avoid it more than protecting ourselves from the virus, gives us the necessary time for scientists to find a cure for this disease.
And it could be said that the risk of a resurgence is the collapse of the health system which in turn could trigger a wave of deaths and a new closure of the economy and social isolation, in other words, the return to phase 0 when the existence of this was barely known.
This is why, although an economic opening is at the doorstep, the measures or recommendations with which we have gone through the pandemic should not be softened.
Thus, the responsibility to reduce the risk of virus contagion is in the hands of each one, who in addition to adopting each measure that is indicated must consider the possibility that until a vaccine against the virus is developed, the measures will continue to be part of our daily lives.
If you are part of the authorized community to reactivate your economic activity, pay special attention to the federal, local and health entity recommendations, to avoid violating regulations; if on the other hand you are part of the employees called upon to reactivate the country's economy, do not allow your employer to violate your rights.
