The most recent episode of racism in the United States that ended with the homicide of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer has sparked protests from different groups seeking respect for human rights around the world.

How has been the struggle for social equality and abolition of racism in the United States.

  • 1. Racism in the United States originated in the nineteenth century, when due to the boom in the cotton industry, the number of slaves of African origin in the south of the country increased considerably.
  • 2. In 1831, more than 200 years after the arrival of the first slaves to the United States, the rebellion of slaves led by Nat Turner took place, in which around 50 white people died. This episode generated reprisals by local militias who murdered around 120 slaves and free blacks.
  • 3. Between 1861 and 1865 under the power of Abraham Lincoln the Civil War took place in which, among other things, the abolition of slavery was sought; the slaveholders of the south were defeated, which led to the founding of the extremist organization Ku Klux Klan.
  • 4. In 1870, 15 amendments to the United States Constitution took place, among which is one that granted the right to vote to African Americans.
  • 5. Between 1876 and 1962 the Jim Crow Laws were approved, which referred to racial segregation, under the mandate of "separate but equal". These were enacted by conservative Democrats who gradually regained power in the southern states of the country and aimed at segregation in schools, public places and transportation, as well as segregation of bathrooms and restaurants among others.
  • 6. In 1963 Martin Luther King delivered the speech "I Have a Dream" in front of the United States Congress. One of the most famous paragraphs of the speech reads "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation in which they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character".
  • 7. In 1964 President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act, which meant the end of racial segregation in the United States.
  • 8. In 2009 Barack Obama was elected as the first African American president in history.
  • 9. In 2013 the Black Lives Matter movement was created after the acquittal of George Zimmerman for the death of an African American teenager from a gunshot and continued as a form of protest against racial profiling, police brutality and racial inequality in the country's justice system.
  • 10. In 2020, George Floyd was arrested by the police who caused his death by asphyxiation. This case caused the fury of thousands of protesters who since then have taken to the streets of different cities around the world demanding respect for civil rights and an end to police brutality. Officer Chauvin was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter.
