Coronavirus Discrimination?

¿Discriminación por Coronavirus?

You can listen to this article in the podcast that appears below or if you prefer, you can continue reading. The information will be the same.

The rapid spread of the Covid-19 virus around the world, combined with the lack of knowledge among a large percentage of people around the globe, has led to other types of behaviors inherent to human beings to multiply and spread as quickly and dangerously as Coronavirus. We are talking about panic, selfishness, and the saddest of all, discrimination.

Since last December, when the disease was identified, the media filled their programming schedules with all kinds of information that may or may not be related to the virus. They showed the world the lifestyle of the inhabitants of the Chinese city, eating habits, hygiene, cohabitation, and much more information that became the tool used by other people to express their xenophobia toward Asians.

Social media also plays a very important role in Covid-19 discrimination, and since they are channels of opinion that are governed by the immediacy of interaction, they fail due to the lack of filtering or control of publications. So much so that the United Nations Organization (UN) published a message last February on its Twitter account to stop attacks on the Asian community "Concern about coronavirus is understandable. But fear cannot justify prejudice and discrimination against the Asian community. Let's fight racism, end hatred, and support each other in this global health emergency."

Before the United States closed its borders or controlled immigration to the country, the attitude of intolerance that was evident toward the Asian community causes, according to the WHO, the spread of the virus, since the stigma caused "people to hide the disease to avoid discrimination," which would mean they would not consult a doctor immediately and would continue their behavioral habits, increasing the risk of contagion.

Not only Asians have suffered from xenophobia and discrimination due to Covid-19. For some reason, immigrants in general in the United States, regardless of their country of origin, have been the subject of these practices, in which the aggressors do not take into account that their victims may be the most vulnerable population to infection.

For immigrants, the virus means the fear of not having health insurance or, in the case of undocumented immigrants, it means the fear of deportation due to their immigration status.

Are you suffering from discrimination due to Covid-19?

In response to this fear and in order to provide security to the inhabitants of the North American country regardless of their nationality, socioeconomic status, or immigration status, President Donald Trump suspended raids against undocumented immigrants on March 19th, and the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) will limit itself to processing foreign nationals who have committed a crime in the country.

This is expected to allow all people who believe they need medical attention to seek and receive it without any fear.
