As announced by the entity and after several extensions in closing dates, USCIS has reopened some of the local offices where service to the public will resume with non-emergency procedures; however, this opening is carried out with multiple precautionary measures in order to prevent the spread of the virus.

On its website, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service urges people who need to extend their stay, renew their Permanent Resident Card, apply for naturalization or replace their naturalization document, to do so using the digital services and online procedures available for that purpose, since they will not be allowed entry to the facilities if they have symptoms of illness, or have had contact with a sick person or someone suspected of contagion during the last 14 days.

Procedures that will resume at USCIS

    • Appointments and rescheduling will be notified by the local offices to pending petitioners, with 10 days in advance.
    • Asylum appointments are expected to be held virtually and applicants will receive a notification with the scheduling date.
    • Oath ceremonies will be rescheduled, but will now be held briefly in order to limit the exposure time of attendees.
    • Applications, notices and appeals issued by USCIS between March 1 and July 1 will have a period of 60 calendar days to be validly answered to the entity.
    • Delays in extending stay or changes of status will be treated flexibly and at the discretion of the entity; for more information consult the entity's alerts or with an attorney.
