Recently the World Health Organization elevated the new disease originating in Wuhan-China last December, from an epidemic to a pandemic, referring to "an epidemic disease that spreads in several countries of the world simultaneously"

To understand the seriousness of this declaration, let us first clarify some terms:

Endemic:

It refers to its permanent presence in an area due to its atmospheric or health conditions.

Epidemic:

It is a disease that increases its number of cases to a maximum point and then decreases.

Pandemic:

It is a disease that occurs in multiple places in the world in an accelerated manner at the same time.

Although all terms refer to a disease and its condition does not change by being called one way or another, this declaration by the WHO does change the way different countries approach it.

For example, it has been seen that in the search to safeguard the health of its inhabitants, some countries have closed borders or suspended the entry of foreign flights, to reduce the chances that the virus continues to spread, additionally they face the distribution of health resources and the joining of efforts to concentrate their energy on the care of this disease.

The pandemic declaration also does not imply that a state of panic should be entered, as the declaration itself does not indicate that its severity increases.

In other words, this declaration is a manifest request from the WHO to different countries to activate and expand their emergency response mechanisms, isolating Covid-19 cases that present in each one and conducting exhaustive monitoring of people with whom they have had contact.

So then it is the task of all to contribute to the eradication and control of this disease, which is why we share some measures we can take to be part of the solution:

Avoid traveling to places with high cases of contagion.

It is understandable that in some cases travel plans could have been made previously, but it is important to analyze the need to travel during this time, countries such as China, Italy, Japan, Iran, South Korea and Spain, are those that have presented the highest number of infections.

Do not wear masks unless you are sick.

The use of masks does not prevent droplets expelled by a sick person from entering your system through the mouth or nose, but it does reduce the amount of particles emitted during sneezing or coughing. For this reason, masks are only advisable for people with colds, flu, or diagnosed cases.

Avoid contact with sick people.

Regardless of the origin of your interlocutor's illness, contracting any disease reduces your body's immune capacity to fight the virus if necessary

If you have symptoms of flu or doubt about contagion, avoid interacting with children and adults.

Although the virus can affect everyone equally, children and older adults with respiratory or cardiac conditions are the most vulnerable population to this virus due to the compromise of their body's defenses.

Pay attention to your hygiene.

There is no doubt that your hygiene is good, but in these cases it is better to err on the side of excess, wash your hands with soap and water more frequently, use anti-bacterial gels, do not rub your mouth, nose and eyes, sneeze or cough into the inside of your elbow and if you use tissues, dispose of them in a sealed container.

Avoid sharing food or utensils.

Remember that the mucous membrane is the primary means of virus transmission.

Avoid the consumption of tobacco and alcohol.

The consumption of these substances weakens your immune system.

Avoid mass gatherings and practice self-isolation.

In case of suspected contagion, report it to health authorities and protect yourself to prevent contagion to other peopleAt Conexión Legal we offer free consultation for cases of social security; contact us through this channel via the WhatsApp icon or by Scheduling your Consultation and explore the alternatives for solving your case. These are just some of the recommendations that different health institutions have issued, but remember that it is essential to stay informed with certified sources to face this situation.
