In recent days, President Trump published the program "Opening up America Again" which contains the guidelines adopted for the economic reopening of the United States, which includes 3 phases aimed at getting people back to work, while protecting their lives.

This program was developed with the advice of public health experts and aims for different States to prepare to face this and future challenges.

Phases of the Opening up America Again program

Phase 1

It will be applied to States and Regions that meet the selection criteria, but maintains social distancing measures, telework, school closures, and compliance with strict protocols for places that convene a high number of people.

Phase 2

For States and Regions that have no evidence of disease resurgence and meet the selection criteria. In this phase, persons belonging to the group vulnerable to the disease must remain in quarantine, but restrictions are relaxed related to travel and mass gatherings up to 50 people; likewise, telework should be encouraged.

Phase 3

States and Regions that meet the criteria once again, may allow free movement of people, even if not for an essential purpose; cinemas, schools, restaurants and bars may reopen and/or increase their occupancy percentage. However, the implementation of safety protocols in each of the aforementioned spaces will continue to be encouraged.

Guidelines of the Opening up America Again program

For employees

  • 1. Maintain good hygiene practices; wash your hands frequently, especially after touching high-traffic items or surfaces, avoid touching your face, cover your mouth with the inside of your elbow when sneezing or coughing, disinfect surfaces constantly and wear masks or face coverings while in public.
  • 2. If you are sick, you should not report to your workplace or school but you should inform your healthcare provider immediately and follow the instructions provided by them.

For employers

  • 1. Implement policies in accordance with the guidelines provided by federal, state and local authorities, in addition to social distancing practices, temperature checks, sanitation, provision of protective equipment and disinfection of common areas.
  • 2. Monitor the workforce in search of symptoms of the disease.
  • 3. Implement follow-up protocols for contacts of your workforce in case of positive Covid tests.

This is just an approach to how the return to work is expected to be in each State of the country, but its implementation is mandatory, so it is important that as an employee or employer you understand the responsibilities that come with economic reactivation.
